There are also ROG Strix Hero Editions that is only come with the 8th Generation Intel Core i5 8300H and 8 Gigabytes memory, which is a bit cheaper than the mentioned one. So, you are still able to reduce the budget cost, but, it’s likely less than around $200 only.

ROG Strix Hero Edition Build & Design Quality

Being in a 15 inches gaming laptop type and category, the ROG Strix Hero Edition has the design with a good quality of 15.6-inches display screen size, 2.4 cm or 0.94-inches of thickness, and weighing in about at 2.6 kg or 5.73 pounds.

The mentioned device has a combination of brushed aluminum and plastic for its exterior frame design. This excellent quality of it makes it a standard fare in this price range. Additionally, it has an interesting dragon-scale pattern on the lid.

For a gaming machine, there is nothing much we can expect from its dimensional features as in a 15-inches laptop category. When compared to other gaming laptops like the Acer Predator Helios 300 on thickness, the mentioned laptop is better.

Portability

Unfortunately, when it comes to ultraportable this laptop is not much for carrying around. The 5.73 pounds of weight without the adapter is a little too heavy to put it in an ultraportable gaming laptop category, but, it is still a portable computer though.

Honestly, based on its dimensional characters and weight, my point of view about this notebook, it is still manageable for some people even carrying it with or without the AC adapter. But, if you think the 2.6 kg is too much, a laptop like MSI GF63-8RC may help.

Keyboard & Touchpad

The keyboard of the Asus ROG Strix Hero Edition is a customizable RGB (Red, Green, Blue) backlit color model keyboard with 4 separate hotkeys.

Asus claims they’ve designed and built this notebook’s keyboard can stand firm the 20-million keystroke durability. In addition to that, just like any other 15 inches laptop, the keyboard also owns its numeric pad.

And, as for the trackpad just like many other notebooks, it is good enough and tracks precisely. However, since this device is for gaming or maybe for creating 3D content, you’re unlikely to be using it much.

Ports & Connectivity

For the port options, it includes one USB 2.0 Type-A port, three USB 3.1 Type-A Gen 1 ports, mini Display Port, an HDMI 1.4 port for external display, and a USB 3.1 Type-C Gen 2 port (10 Gigabytes per second transfer data rate).

In addition to that, this laptop also installed with an RJ 45 LAN Jack for LAN insert, SD Card Reader, Headphone-out & Audio-in Combo Jack, charging port, built-in 802.11 ac 2×2 Wi-Fi (faster than traditional 802.11 b, g, n), and Bluetooth 4.1.

With all of these features, I think there is nothing more to argue concerning this topic. This model of laptop from Asus is comprehensive enough in term of connectivity.

Cooling System Design

According to Asus company, they’ve designed this 2.6 kg notebook with an Anti-Dust Cooling system and describes it is an exclusive design forces dust and debris to exit the chassis through the fan module’s two anti-dust tunnels.

Additionally, the two mighty 12 V offers more and higher fan speeds when compared to regular 5 V fans, in case if ROG Strix Hero gets heated up it may reduce it, especially when you play a high-end game.

Screen & Display Quality

The ROG (Republic of Gamer) Strix Hero Edition screen display is a Full HD with capacity 1980×1020 pixels max resolutions. More than that, the 15.6 inches IPS-Type Panel screen on this device is also featured with 120Hz 3ms refresh rate (which is resulting in smoother playback).

The speed of 120Hz refresh rate screen option can reduce lag and blur when gaming, plus by its Full HD capacity gives you a beautiful, sharp, and bright image display. It is also very fast, because of the higher refresh rate for the screens, deliver more frames.

Other gaming machines like Acer Predator Helios 300 and MSI GF63-8RC are only running at the 60Hz refresh rate. Laptop running with the 60Hz screen is relatively average even if the laptops built for 3D content or gaming purpose.

Battery Performance

Features with all those high-performance from the high quality of the internal parts, and combine into a 15.6-inches artificial beast, you must be wondering how long can this laptop last.

Being in a gaming style, you can expect the battery life is okay. Judging from its capacity, maybe it can hold around 4 hours in minimal usage by full battery charge.

And, bring along the AC adapter and don’t far away from the power outlet when gaming. So, in my opinion for gaming purposes, this device is also okay.

Performance & Graphics

Fix with the 8th Generation Intel Core i7 (2.2 GHz power) processor, 6-Cores, and strong boost up to 3.9 GHz is a high performance, and even better than it’s predecessors. You can enjoy a vast leap in gaming and some productivity performance.

More than that, the 16 GB memory and 128 GB capacity of Solid-State Drive storage can let you experience the multitasking activities and store productivity programs, software, and games.

In addition to that, as for the graphics performance, this laptop is so great and powerful enough. The installed graphics card is the Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti, and it helps the users to ensure there are no issues when running most of the latest games.

Nvidia GTX 1050 graphics performance is adequate for modern games today, but, the Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti engines can perform around 30% better than the mentioned GPU. But, for 3D content creation do not expect much from creating 4k textures.

Conclusion

Overall, the Asus ROG Strix is excellent for gaming and consider good for its pricing. The Anti-Dust Cooling system and 120Hz 3ms screen refresh rate are unique compared to other laptops within this price bracket.

Plus, combined with its powerful CPU, GPU/graphics card, adequate Hybrid Drive capacity, and 16 GB memory for multitasking makes it an attractive and good enough for competing in the today gaming world.

Sound quality is also good. Unfortunately, because of some several reasons like battery life & weight, it’s still not an ultraportable gaming laptop, and there is some user also complains of its webcam quality.

Thanks for the great post. The price is definitely attractive. How would this unit compare to Alienware? Mine is about 4 years old now and I have been thinking about getting something new.

What a beautiful device. I think for what you get such as high-performance gaming capabilities and customizable keyboard, it’s a great price. I had a laptop with 8 gigs of RAM and it performed beautifully, so I know I wouldn’t be disappointed with the Asus ROG Strix. This would definitely be my go-to device for gaming because of its affordable price and great quality.

    Thanks for the review!
