Since the ultrabook is for a line of high-end subnotebook, there’s a wide range of high-end laptops currently in the market. And, many of those are inaccessible for the students and other budget buyers due to the cost issue.

Notably, on the 15-inch laptop categories, it’s hard to find that is respectable thin and light laptops. There are 15 inches ultrabooks like Dell XPS 15 and MacBook Pro, but they cost well over $1000.

Fortunately, ultrabook like the VivoBook S 15 series from Asus is one of the best options for this issue. The VivoBook S15 series define by its slim NanoEdge display and matte anti-glare coating. Plus, unlike the Dell XPS 15 and XPS 13 series, the VivoBook S15 costs notably less.

Design

When speaking about the design, its a fine and good-looking laptop, with a matte plastic base (deck and sides) and brushed aluminum outer lid, the Icicle Gold with Gold Trim color of Asus VivoBook S S510UA-DS51 is calm on the eyes and may give you the feeling it’s a metal casing from afar.

The narrow-bezel of “Nano Edge” technology around the screen measures only by 0.3 inches on the both (left and right) side, and 0.4-inch on the top bezel. The Acer Aspire E 15 is one of the favorite budget desktop-replacement laptops, but in term of portability, the VivoBook S 15 is way better.

So, when we look at the attractive design and portability of this unit, the VivoBook S 15 is forming a positive first impression in a price range where traditional styles are too mainstream.

Keyboard

As for the VivoBook S S510UA-DS51 keyboard, it comes with a backlit chiclet-style keyboard which is frequent and featured by most of the modern ultraportable laptops.

The primary keyboard keys and button has a well-spaced layout, which makes it easy to discover by your fingertips.

Overall, it is a standard keyboard with acceptable 1.4mm vertical travel in the keys. It may deliver the users excellent efficiency on working with word processing tasks application. However, since it’s a 15-inch laptop, it should have an adequate room for a dedicated numeric keypad.

Touchpad and Front Camera

The 10.5 x 7.5 cm plastic clad touchpad has its left and right click sections divided by a line. VivoBook S S510UA-DS51 touchpad has an impressive reaction and able to navigate with high accuracy, and use Windows 10 Touchpad Gestures.

Also, on the touchpad upper right corner, you’ll find an optional fingerprint reader, and as a Windows laptop, it features with Windows 10’s Hello which you can use it easily to log into your system.

However, this unit built-in front camera or Webcam is a let-down. Comes with only 640 x 480 pixels quality, it has the poor image that is grainy, and pixelated.

Connectivity

As for the connectivity, the open ports adequate for standard uses, it’s including USB 3.0, a USB 3.1 port with reversible USB Type-C connector, a pair of USB 2.0 port, HDMI, and SD card ports, 3.5 mm combo audio, and an AC adapter.

Display

Thanks to the NanoEdge technology for delivering a narrow-bezel with only 0.3-inch or 0.76 cm on either side, which gives the VivoBook S S510UA 80% screen-to-body ratio.

This feature makes it fits a full-size 15.6-inch into a typical 14-inch laptop frame. Also, Asus claims the WideView technology has up to 178 degree viewing angles, that can ensure colors and contrast remain vivid and bold.

The 1080p IPS panel has become standard on the modern laptops, its matte screen provides adequate sharp displays, detailed images, with vivid colors and saturation.

It’s colorful when viewing photos, web content, and watching videos. However, it could be better if the brightness for outdoor can be the same as indoor uses.

Performance

Powered with 8th Generation Intel Core i5-8250U quad-core processor and 8 GB of memory, the VivoBook S S510UA-DS51 delivers ultra-smooth visuals with no hiccups.

With the solid-state-drive type of storage, it may help this notebook and your time in reducing the bootup times, and applications load times.

Also, it can easily handle the standard too high workloads, which means, it is powerful enough to handle all daily tasks such as open multiple browser tabs, viewing web contents, online video, and so on.

Plus, it’s also able to handle the for mid-tier hefty productivity such as video editing and heavy compiling. But, the standard Intel integrated graphics is not much for gaming, you can expect to play all light gaming and some favorite games with the lowest settings.

Battery Life

As for the battery, this laptop comes with 3 Cells battery, 42 watt-hours capacity, and it is slightly below the average for an ordinary 15-inch notebook. It can serve you up to 5 hours only with 100% battery on standard use.

The VivoBook F510UA offers the same battery performance, while the Acer Aspire E 15 can serve you up to 9 hours or more. So, you need to carry its charger whenever you want to use it for a more extended session.

Conclusion

From its premium design to performance, comprehensive connections, sharp and colorful display, portability, and prices, it seems like one of the best choices for working on-the-go.

Unfortunately, this laptop also comes with something that bothersome like short battery life, and no Caps Lock key indication and poor quality Webcam. The 1080p IPS panel matte display may help when working outdoors but doesn’t have enough brightness to be used outdoors.

For users that want a good laptop within the $800 price range, and screen size are the main priorities, and coming from a traditional notebook, I recommend this notebook, especially for students and office users.
